In 15 Wisconsin counties, there are no primary-care clinics willing to accept new Medicaid patients. The Marshfield Clinic Ladysmith Dental Center fills this gap for thousands of people. The clinic adjusts its fees based on a number of factors, including a patient's income level. Since November 2002, it has attracted patients from 37 Wisconsin counties and has had a waiting list of more than 1000.
In Wisconsin originally reported on the lack of dental care access for low-income residents back in 2003. Five years later, the problem has not improved. Producer Liz Koerner examines what state agencies and dentists are doing to create more access to dental care, including an innovative program designed to get school age children into a dental chair.
